Trace metals introduced to the environment from fuel combustion, incineration, and industrial emission sources are causing increasing concern to air pollution researchers. Several metals in urban air, including lead and vanadium, are associated with particles in the predominantly submicrometer diameter range thereby presenting an inhalation threat. There is also growing evidence that some metals emitted from stationary sources are concentrated in submicrometer sized particles which may pass through emission control devices. This report summarizes the concentration and size of trace metals in urban air, the concentration ranges found in selected fuels and emission sources, and describes the areas where further studies are needed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has broad, nationwide water resources planning and management responsibilities. In response to the needs of Corps professionals, the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) has developed and supports a family of computer programs designed to aid them in their work. These programs include catchment, channel, alluvial, and statistical process models, system operation models, plan evaluation models, and data management programs. These models individually and collectively have been used throughout the Corps in a wide range of water resources planning studies.  相似文献

Bees produce vibrations in many contexts, including for defense and while foraging. Buzz pollination is a unique foraging behavior in which bees vibrate the anthers of flowers to eject pollen which is then collected and used as food. The relationships between buzzing properties and pollen release are well understood, but it is less clear to what extent buzzing vibrations vary among species, even though such information is crucial to understanding the functional relationships between bees and buzz-pollinated plants. Our goals in this study were (1) to examine whether pollination buzzes differ from those produced during defense, (2) to evaluate the similarity of buzzes between different species of bumblebees (Bombus spp.), and (3) to determine if body size affects the expression of buzzing properties. We found that relative peak amplitude, peak frequency, and duration were significantly different between species, but only relative peak amplitude differed between pollination and defensive buzzes. There were significant interactions between species and buzz type for peak frequency and duration, revealing that species differed in their patterns of expression in these buzz properties depending on the context. The only parameter affected by body size was duration, with larger bees producing shorter buzzes. Our findings suggest that although pollination and defensive buzzes differ in some properties, variability in buzz structure also exhibits a marked species-specific component. Species differences in pollination buzzes may have important implications for foraging preferences in bumblebees, especially if bees select flowers best matched to release pollen for their specific buzzing characteristics.  相似文献

The distribution of a species over space is of central interest in ecology, but species occurrence does not provide all of the information needed to characterize either the well-being of a population or the suitability of occupied habitat. Recent methodological development has focused on drawing inferences about species occurrence in the face of imperfect detection. Here we extend those methods by characterizing occupied locations by some additional state variable (e.g., as producing young or not). Our modeling approach deals with both detection probabilities <1 and uncertainty in state classification. We then use the approach with occupancy and reproductive rate data from California Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis occidentalis) collected in the central Sierra Nevada during the breeding season of 2004 to illustrate the utility of the modeling approach. Estimates of owl reproductive rate were larger than na?ve estimates, indicating the importance of appropriately accounting for uncertainty in detection and state classification.  相似文献

Phosphorus-based land application limits for manure have increased the importance of optimizing diet P management and accurately characterizing the bioavailability of manure P. We examined the effects of pig (Sus scrofa) diets formulated with high-available-P corn and phytase on P levels in excreta and slurry stored for 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 d. Twenty-four pigs (approximately 14 kg each) were fed one of four low-P diets: (i) normal corn, no phytase (control); (ii) normal corn with 600 phytase units kg(-1) (PHY); (iii) high-available-P corn, no phytase (HAP); and (iv) high-available-P corn with 600 phytase units kg(-1) (HAP + PHY). Fresh fecal and stored slurry dry matter (DM) was analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), dissolved molybdate-reactive phosphorus (DRP), dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), acid-soluble reactive phosphorus (ASRP), acid-soluble organic phosphorus (ASOP), and phytate phosphorus (PAP). The PHY, HAP, and HAP + PHY diets significantly (alpha = 0.05) decreased fecal TP 19, 17, and 40%, respectively, compared with the control. Dissolved reactive P was 36% lower in the HAP + PHY diet compared with the other diets. Relative fractions (percent of TP) of DRP, DOP, ASOP, and PAP in slurry generally decreased with storage time up to 150 d, with the largest decreases occurring within 60 to 90 d. Diet-induced differences in relative fractions of DRP, DOP, ASRP, and PAP were significant when averaged across storage times, simulating a mixed-age slurry. Relative fractions of DRP in simulated mixed-age slurries were higher in HAP and HAP + PHY diets, indicating that diet may affect P losses under certain P-based application scenarios.  相似文献

The concentrations of SOCs in leaves of an evergreen Australian native tree (Melaleuca leucadendra) and grass collected in Brisbane, Australia were determined. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PAHs in the leaf tissue were comparable to those reported for urbanised areas in other industrialised countries. A distinct difference in the compound profiles between the leaves of the two species was observed, with higher concentrations of the lower molecular mass PAHs and PCDD/Fs and lower concentrations of the higher molecular mass PAHs and PCDD/Fs in the Melaleuca leaves relative to the grass leaves. The interspecies differences are explained on the basis of the larger size of the lipophilic compartment (for compounds with low K(OA)) and the lower ratio of surface area to volume in the Melaleuca leaves.  相似文献
